Index data: Crypto Fear & Greed Index by Alternative.me.

How the index is built

According to Alternative.me, the index combines several daily inputs for bitcoin: volatility and maximum drawdowns compared with 30- and 90-day averages (25%), market momentum and volume (25%), social media activity (15%), surveys (15%, which Alternative.me lists as currently paused), bitcoin’s dominance of total crypto market value (10%), and Google search trends (10%). Zero represents extreme fear and 100 extreme greed. The index and its methodology belong to Alternative.me; EskiSignal displays their published data with attribution.

How to use it, and its limits

Sentiment gauges are most often read as contrarian: extreme fear has coincided with sell-offs that later reversed, and extreme greed with stretched rallies. That relationship is loose. Readings can stay at an extreme for weeks, and the inputs — volatility, momentum, search interest — largely describe what price has already done rather than what it will do. It is a summary of recent market behaviour, not a trading signal.
