Stock market hours

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq hold their regular session from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Both close for the same holidays. Extended-hours trading runs before and after the regular session on electronic venues — typically 4:00 to 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. — but which hours you can actually trade depends on your broker, and liquidity outside the regular session is thinner, with wider spreads.

Holidays that are often confused

Stock markets stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, even though banks and the bond market close or shorten their hours on those days. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the exchanges usually close the Friday before — except New Year’s Day, which is not moved back into the old year. When it falls on a Sunday, they close the following Monday.

Early closes at 1:00 p.m. Eastern apply on the day after Thanksgiving and, in some years, on Christmas Eve or the day before Independence Day. Equity options trade until 1:15 p.m. on those days.
